Master’s+

Get 57% off your master’s at Wheaton College Graduate School!

Students accepted by both Wheaton and ELIC receive a 57% tuition discount on an M.A. in TESOL and Intercultural studies. This is the standard professional degree for positions in universities and language institutes throughout the world. Wheaton’s online program is designed to give both new and experienced teachers a solid foundation in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Their field-based format has been offered to ELIC teachers since 2000, while intensive on-campus courses give the option of in-person community building. In combination with the TEFL certificate included in ELIC’s long-term orientation, this MA can be completed in three years.

Learning Methods

Step 1

Foundation

This program will lay a foundation of teaching and planning techniques for the four skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) along with pronunciation and grammar. This practical introduction to teaching methods provides valuable resources for new teachers and a helpful refresher for those with more experience.

Step 2

Classroom Management

Teachers will take a deep dive on how to present instruction and manage a classroom in an overseas context. Topics include lesson planning, how to conduct a language drill, strategies for structuring group work, and how to deal with management issues.

Step 3

Real-World Application

Since teaching requires a significant amount of “on-the-job training,” this program includes mentoring and several real classroom observations. This ensures that the teacher can put the techniques they have learned into practice with real students.
